Statement Of Purpose: A Career In Nursing

As a child, I never wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to be Canadian, but my teacher informed that is not a job. At the time, I disagreed, but that boiled down to semantics. To me, being Canadian meant being friendly, helping others, and being a good person. As I grew older I found I held onto those ideals, along with a few new ones: a desire to care for those in need, seek out the truth, right the wrongs in the world, empower and advocate for those without a voice, to stand up to the intrinsic inequalities in the world, and most importantly, I always wanted to fix things. This last belief made me believe I should study engineering when I first entered college. Unfortunately, I was misguided in my thought process. What I really wanted was to fix people. It is only when I am helping and caring for others that I feel truly satisfied. It is these beliefs that have led me to pursue a career in nursing. My personal nursing attitude and philosophy is one that is centered on compassion and empowering patients to not only help themselves but also advocate for themselves. Teamwork is paramount to nursing. A nurse cannot save or care for a patient on his or her own. Having happy, positive, well cared for coworkers is vital to providing quality patient care. When nurses and other healthcare professionals are overworked, tired, underappreciated, stressed and underutilized, optimal patient care decreases (Marquis & Huston, 2016). There must be a good work-life balance so that nurses and other healthcare professionals do not become burnt-out by the stresses of this line of work. My hope is to help provide this change so that teams may work together more succinctly. I believe a happy, optimistic, fun work culture will have more effect on patient moral and care and will thus result in better overall
