This matter has been given a lot of attention both in the USA and in the countries where coffee is grown. Because of the constant scrutiny from regulatory bodies and environmental agencies alike, it is of utmost importance to adhere to international and local laws and always abide by Fair Trade policies and procedures when sourcing raw materials.
Regulatory laws have grown stricter both in the US and in the countries where coffee is grown, and that has made it ever so important to be watchful of both, as large multinational corporation such as Starbucks are often the target of a large amount of scrutiny of its business processes and are expected to serve as ethical model for smaller businesses.
Other important political factors to consider are Tax Policies and Labor Laws in all the different countries where Starbucks operates. The fact that Starbucks based its EMEA headquarters in the Netherlands purely for tax reasons was highly scrutinized by the European Commission and has brought a lot of unwanted attention to their tax policies, which in turn made customers turn their back to the coffee giant, especially in the UK, where it was perceived that Starbucks was not paying Corporative Taxes.
