The Role of a Counselor after Crisis: Bringing a Community Together Trauma remains active in a survivor’s mind as they contemplate intentions and rationales of different times. As a counselor envisions helping a client surmount a devastating crisis, the counselor must consider “where is the client as the client is in thought,” or even better “when is the client as the client thinks?” Thinking is associated in a curious way to time because it subsists out of order in the client’s mind after crisis. A thought can be internally muddled and out of sync with the harmony of a person’s past, present, and future while upending the equilibrium of the individual’s emotional and psychological state. The second thing that affected me was all the feelings I had while I was persecuted all those years for being gay as I grew up. Next, each minute to minute news update seemed to echo the night’s gunshots that killed and wounded the innocent club goers like a societal confirmation that “the Gays should die because it was God’s will.” Lastly, I realized that I was not a kid, I was not in New York, and I was in the safety of my home even though my mind was in panic. It is particularly essential that counselors demonstrate the aptitude to respond to conditions of crisis. If one stands able, a counselor must safeguard survivors from supplementary exposure after crisis, guide them to other services such as first aid, food, or water, and then unite them with their families, friends, and communities. This is the essence of psychological first aid suggested by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and it is most needed immediately after a crisis or devastating trauma.
