Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower has been challenged or banned publicly eleven times since 2009. It is commonly called out for its depiction of homosexuality, sex, masturbation, and drug use. In 2010, this book, along with 17 others, was challenged in Fairfax County in Virginia by a group called Parents Against Bad Books in Schools (PABBIS). PABBIS cites their reasons for challenging The Perks of Being a Wallflower for “containing profanity and descriptions of drug abuse, sexually explicit conduct, and torture.” PABBIS’s claims never got anywhere because of their disregard for the first amendment which includes freedom to read that extends to children. In 2015, a parent complained about the book in Wallingford, Connecticut.

In a few areas a great book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many books like it are being banned. To Kill a Mockingbird is a very informative book on what life was like in the 1930’s, but it is still being banned for strong language, “strong content”, and strong cases of racism. Many schools have had kids read that book, but because of recent events a few have started to ban it. Some people believe that they can teach messages like the ones taught from this book, but in a better way, so they make it more suitable for kids to read. Some citizens feel that kids should be introduced to strong topics like this when they are in around 8th grade, which is a very common time for schools to have children/teens to read this novel in school, because kids need to be prepared for the real world early on.…

Harper Lee claims that this book is not autobiographical, but says there are many similarities between the story and her life. Her father was a lawyer as was Scout, who is the main character of the story. Harper said she was also a tomboy growing up similar to how Scout acts in the novel.…

What causes people to change? Experiences, who you may be surrounded by, or even simple words said by someone you look up to. All these things can play a part in someone’s life when they are developing their character. They can decide whether you will become a straight A student or someone who doesn 't care about school, a doctor or a drug addict, or even things like having a clean record or being in prison for life. In The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky uses these factors to develop the character of Charlie.…

Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…

When preparing for this assignment, I was unaware of the impact Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky had on individuals. At a recent dinner party I had commented on the topic of this paper and immediately a guest jumped into the conversation expressing her emphatic love for the novel. She expressed how it gave her space to “explore thoughts she was unable to express before” (Ashworth) When I asked further on whether or not some of the content was problematic, she merely shrugged, assuring me that life is filled with the “awkward and bad things” that everyone has to go through. With this sentiment in mind, it gave me a clearer picture on the positive impact the novel had. However, I was still hesitant without further research on the…
