From the years 2003 to the present day, The Perks of Being A Wallflower has been forbidden in various schools and public libraries throughout the United States. School administrations, parents and school board members have challenged and banned the novel, claiming that the content was too explicit to permit students to read. The book included explicit material that included drug use, bestiality, alcohol, masturbation, rape, torment, and teenage sex (Heins 45). The Districts felt that although students had the ability to understand what they wished, the book was too inappropriate for schools and public libraries to allow them to obtain. They felt that the concepts within the books were not suited for the youth. The banning and challenging of books has been a historical problem that has come about in several communities and societies. Book censorships have derived from issues that relate with religious beliefs, morals, racism, politics, hate speech, and even legal issues.
