Relationship development in The Perks of Being a Wallflower The novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower, written by Stephen Chbosky, follows the story of Charlie, an introverted and lonesome character who describes his experiences as he enters the realm of his first year of high school. His start in high school was rough, and he even counts the days until he would have to leave. His first friend Charlie meets were Patrick and through him, he ends up meeting his crush, Sam. Befriending Sam and Patrick bring Charlie through thing he has never experience before. Throughout the novel, Charlie, his sister, and his friends fall in and out of a relationship. Brad has a lot going for him so he is not comfortable coming out and he works hard to hide this secret from the public. Patrick is quite affectionate with Brad, “And Bob started to make fun of him having a crush on the quarterback. And Patrick smiled more. I don’t think I ever saw Patrick smile so much” (25). Patrick is interested romantically in Brad, and his feeling for Brad is immense. Patrick is willing to sacrifice a lot to continue seeing Brad but due to sociality treating homosexuality as an issue, they had to hide their relationship away. Furthermore, along the course of the story, Brad’s father caught them together and Brad was forced to end their relationship. After being caught together, Brad felt peer pressure to despise the Patrick and attacked him by calling him a “faggot” during the lunch. Patrick is fed up with life and all its degrading rule. He talks to Charlie saying, “You ever think…the only real difference between us is what we wear and why we wear it? Well, I think it is bullshit” (87). Patrick experiences Brad’s betrayal and turns to drinking, and drugs to numb himself from his troubles he’s feeling. He is desperate of escaping, in which lead him to suffer much worse in consequence to his recklessness. To Charlie finding and making friends was the answer to his issue. Making friends matters a lot for Charlie because the sensation of belonging come from it bring him happiness. Charlie may often repress this thought and emotions but on the surface, he is caring and loving to all the people that share the same mutual feeling. All the characters in The Perks of Being a Wallflower desire to find love, and yet the love they think they deserve was not what it seems. The people like Charlie, his sister, and his friends are under the same desire to seek this unachievable goal they fantasy about.
