Reflection On The Performance Ensemble

In the Performance Ensemble’s production of The Fiery and the Snuffy; or, As If Through Separation, the students had a opportunity to develop and workshop their own characters. Once each student created their own unique characters they brought them all together to create a single work. Overall, I found the performance interesting to watch; however, I found that at times the multiple storylines were complicated and hard to follow. There were moments that completely captivated my attention as an audience member. The strength of actors, the motif of water, and the overall design concept created a successful performance. While at time the intertwining storylines made the performance complex and hard to follow; however the strength of the individual …show more content…
In the Performance Ensemble’s show water was present a some point in each characters story. Some examples include the water in the bath tub, the water in the tap dance scene, and the water in the bucket of water where the one character almost drown. Along with each of these instances of water a death or near death experience followed. In the bath tub, the one character attempted suicide to escape the voices in her head. The one was blatantly almost drowned to death in the one scene. In the dance off scene, the tap dance in the water was followed by a shoot off resulting in the death of both character. In addition to these instances, the performance ended with it raining. The rain most likely symbolized the girls who died on there bus ride and the final character heading west to her death. The choice to use water to represent death in the show is interesting because water typically symbolizes purity and cleansing. Even in the cover of the program, all the characters are submerged in a pool of water. The motif of water helped to pull the show together and make a more cohesive …show more content…
The space that the show was performed in is not what most people think of when going to the theater. The director created a black box style theater by moving the audience in two different configurations throughout the performance. The director also use all the doors in the room as entrances and exits, as opposed to only using the wings. Since the space was so large and open, the director made a smart decision to have actors and stage crew move slowly in and out of the stage to make the scene changes less distracting and seamless. In addition to the scene changes, the director used light to the performances advantage. By placing the light behind actors for certain scenes the director was able to mask other character while creating a dramatic and beautiful effect, this in particular during the bath tub scene. In a space that is so different from typical theaters the director was able to present a complex storyline in a seamless

The music design of One Flat Thing Reproduced was quite complimentary to the entire essence of the composition. Right at the beginning when you watch the two dancers eerily crawl under the tables in the shadows, you begin to hear equally as unearthly noises courtesy of Thom Willems (music director). These sounds, which can hardly be considered music, continue throughout the entire piece. The music would change at times and never distinctly following any type of pattern, while it also allowed the dancers movements to be heard. This greatly allowed for the emotion and story to seep through without being suffocating, leading to a more natural work.…

For four days (January 17th to 20th), University of Toronto’s Trinity College Dramatic Society (TCDS) had performed Paula Vogel’s 1997 play How I Learned to Drive. The play revolves around Li’l Bit who reflects on her relationship with Uncle Peck, while learning the rules of the road. Through a retrospective narrative, Li’l Bit tells how learning to drive became a sexual motive for Uncle Peck. At the same time, Li’l Bit acknowledges the consequences of her actions, which affects her future. While being a student-run production, TCDS had met with great exceptions regarding the ability to produce and perform a play that focuses on a sexual abuse.…

When Vivienne told the audience her story, the light on the stage was turned off, and a spotlight was turned on for each animal that talked. Since the animals were in the back behind the stage, giving them a spotlight for each time they introduced their stories was a nice way to shift the focus of the location. It sets apart from the main stage and serves as a nice transition from Vivienne’s narratives. I felt the audience was ready to listen to the white egron and the mole once the lights were completely turned…

The architectural space discussed in this video was Teatro Olimpico by Vincenzo Scamozzi. In this theater the architect uses perspective to create a space that really isn't there. even though it is a covered theater he uses paintings and smaller buildings in the distance to create the illusion. The biggest thing this illusion needed was lighting. They used oil lamps and aluminum sheets to provide the lights.…

Water is not only present on 71 percent of the Earth’s surface it also present nearly 100 percent of “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” It is used throughout the book and movie many times as the setting for several events and as a symbol for a variety of ideas. Death, salvation, rebirth and deception by water in both the book and the movie adaptation of “The Talented Mr. Ripley. ” Death is the first and perhaps most apparent of the three. Since its introduction to the public in 1921, Six Characters in Search of an Author has been inspiring theatre artists towards the absurd realm of the metatheatrical. Both absurd theatre and the idea of something being metatheatrical in fact have strong roots in Six Characters in Search of an Author, as it was so ahead of its time in terms of realism and naturalism on stage. In the vein of the original production, subsequent productions of the piece have strived for the same shock value the first performance held over its audience. Whether in the angry first audience, the more accepting and open later audiences of the era, or the modern audiences of today; the play evokes a strong sense of discomfort and ambiguity as directors and theatre…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

The symbol of water is used a lot throughout the book, and is used in a very clever and interesting way to show their relationship.…

Intricate details on the scenery made the buildings feel authentic and inviting, grabbing my attention from the moment I walked in the theatre. The costuming was also fantastic, portraying the time period well and adding even more authenticity to the production. All of these individual aspects of a play production acted as an important role, but none of them caught my attention as much as the storyline. I was entwined in the story from the moment the stage lights came on, engulfing myself in the man-made atmosphere presented in front of me. The story went on to tell a tale of a greedy…

But, Igor gets to escape; for this reason, the water has a positive connotation, and the water stops being a weapon to kill, to be a weapon of life.
