Teams consist of multiple roles including leaders, starters, and supporters who all contribute and are vital to the success of the team. Athletes who are willing to put in extra time and effort earn main roles on the team. Meanwhile, positive teammates who may not be as athletically gifted or old enough to play in a starring position, make the team to fulfill a supporting role throughout the season. The starters, main players, supporters, and even bench warmers are important to the success of the team. High school coaches should not be required to give equal playing time to all athletes who make the team because there are multiple spots to be

Although this is accurate, it does not mean that all the athletes that make the team should be given the same amount of playing time. With sports providing a plethora of lifetime skills, there are multiple ways to add to the team. Some players who make the team, depending on variables such as age, skill, and work ethic, fill other roles than major playing time positions. Starting roles and other main playing time positions are limited so teams are filled with other members as well. Some teammates are looked to for their leadership and supportive team qualities. “Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story” (Casey Stengel). Coming across players who do not have a starting position or are even considered bench warmers who are still willing to come to practice everyday and do all the groundwork to support the team are hard to find. Their positive supporting attitude helps lead the team to success and is just as important. “Leaders aren’t born. They are made and they are made like anything else. Through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal” (Vince Lombardi).
