Ballet: Videotaped Performance

Improved Essays
After an entire semester of ballet class, I am able to say that I acquired the most basic knowledge of the field. Although my performance was not always the best, I managed to learn the sequences and movements. By watching the videotaped performance, I was able to identify the aspects of ballet technique that were taught along the semester and that I performed correctly, as well as the aspects that need further correction and improvement. Also, as compared to the midterm self-evaluation, it is possible for me to say that I made a progress regarding the quality of movements when dancing. The aspects that, under my consideration, I was able to proficiently perform were mostly related to the first three portion of the exam, as the movements were similar to the combination performed in the midterm, it was easier for me to improve and remember the sequences. In the first portion I …show more content…
Therefore, my performance reflected the progress made along the semester. As I have mentioned before, this was my first experience with ballet, and as a result I can say that I was able to learn and gain new respect for the ones that dedicate their lives to the performance, and to appreciate ballet performance from a different point of view. Before taking this introductory course, I was not aware of the effort and sacrifice that means to be a dancer and through every practice I noticed how hard it is to be good at ballet. Also, as I mentioned at the beginning of the semester, I am a nursing major and ballet was not a class I was expecting to take during my college life. However, I tried my best to learn the sequences and learn as much as I could and to not give up. Overall, and despite the fact that my performance was not as successful as I would have like, I am happy with the fact that I was able to gain new knowledge in a field different than

This production was built on a strong foundation of classical ballet technique and repertoire but heavily infused with pop and rock style. The ballet technique was not hidden or shied away from. I was impressed by the successful integration of the classical style into the rock and roll type theme. The ballet vocabulary ranged from basic practices of turnout, épaulment, posture and pointe work…

They called my name, in a haze, I got up and went to my spot. I felt the stares of the parents and the judges. It was a true test of my focus and confidence, checking whether I could do my forms and combinations with the distractions sitting around me. I tried to do my best from what I could remember from class, but as I began the moves slowly came back to me like I had known how to do it the entire time. When I finished, they saved the hardest part of the test to the end, board breaking, where we had to break wooden boards to show our physical strength.…

My ballet vocabulary has great improved and I am well aware of what each move is called. My spelling isn’t perfect, but I am getting there. Before coming to Coker, ballet vocabulary wasn’t as important to me as it is now. My old studio use to come up with our own words so that we could remember the move the way we saw it, so when I got here, I had to relearn everything. However, I knew the basic terms, but not the more complicated ones.…

    Aid A Ballet Sequence

I knew that this was a ballet sequence because it involves a troupe of women dancing with musical accompaniment. The dancers were expressing the Egyptian victory over the Ethiopians without using words. I also read in the program that Verdi included three ballet sequences (the use of ballet fits within the Romantic time period), which was unique because Aida is a very Italian Opera. The program stated that Italian Operas tended to keep opera and dance…

For my ballroom dance activity, I went to Capital Dance Center on May 9, 2017 (7PM), which was in Rancho Cordova, California. Alexey Baykov instructed a one-hour group session of American Style Smooth Foxtrot. When I arrived at the location, I was glad that I dressed appropriately for the event because the other leads were dressed in dress shirts, slacks, and dance shoes too. There were six females and five other males dancing, and they all seemed to be middle age. I was the youngest person there, and the dancers were definitely far more experience than I was.…

As a freshman, in 2014, I attended the first few technique courses clueless about adapting to them and writing collegiate papers. Coming from a background of mainly jazz and tap, I knew I would face challenges while learning modern and ballet techniques. One of the many challenges I faced was learning to take advantage of my kinesphere. During each modern class, I was encouraged to dance bigger and really reach out in order for my movement to expand. Even though I found it to be a challenge, I was not aware of how large I could move, until I pushed myself.…

Adorned with a tutu and pink carousel umbrella, I stood in the wings like a statue waiting for my music to play. I was five years old, my tape was lost in the mix, and I was terrified. That day I walked out onto the stage clenching my umbrella for dear life and completed my first ballet performance without a single hiccup. The show went on. And on for fourteen more years until finally abandoning the barre for academics in pursuit of another field highly focused on the body; medicine.…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…

Since the beginning of the semester, my goals are progressing at a rapid pace. I intend to remain focused and improve my work ethic as I continue to progress on previous goals while also sharpening my technical abilities. Ballet has never been strong for me, but I feel like my work ethic is making me strive to continue to achieve my goals that I wish to continue on and to progress as a dancer.…

The performance meant a lot to me because it gave me a whole new perspective in the importance of dancing. The dance represented a familiar scenario which I recognized in professional theaters. This was worth my money and time because I was amused and thrilled with new content. The theme of the dance was easy to recognize because of the performers body language and visual appearance. It basically let me know whether it was dark or happy themed.…
