When we arrived at Miss McBride’s an hour later, the coffee was brewing and places were set for us at the table with her fine bone china, the antique silver from a chest in the dining room, and linen napkins the color of snow.
“Morning,” Hannah said, handing us each a glass of orange juice.
Chief Chizelmen licked his thin lips. “Miss McBride take her biscuits out of the oven yet?”
“She didn’t make biscuits today, Chief,” Hannah said.
“Oh,” he replied, and strolled to the table.
“But I’m making omelets.” She cracked open three eggs and turned on the burner under the frying pan to melt the butter.

“What kind of message?”
“A letter from Mr. Wang-Woo. He asked me to meet him at the gas station in Bitter Springs. When I arrived, some guy got out of a car, blindfolded me and pushed me into the backseat. After what seemed like an eternity, we came to a stop. The man removed my blindfold and bolted inside a house, leaving me alone on the lanai. Roughly ten minutes later Mr. Wang-Woo came out and said he’d bought Wayward Winds Estate.”
“What?” Dad said. “Why?”
“Because he’d discovered that Willaston had something inside.” Mr. Shaw stared at him, jiggling his heels up and down like a human sewing machine. “A Stone he needed to retrieve before the mansion was demolished.”
“But even if Mr. Wang-Woo found the Stone you still wouldn’t own the estate,” Twist suggested. “So while you were busy at Willaston Place stirring up a ghost to delay the sale and give yourself the chance to search the mansion for the Stone, Bane was making sure the ghost was seen here. You and he hoped the sightings would scare away the workers, ruin production, and bankrupt Wayward Winds.”
“So you and Bane made the ghost appear.” Miss McBride shook her head. “How sad.”
