“M”... massive, “O”...open, “O”... online, “C”... courses, MOOCs are the future product of the education system we have today. They are a great way to enhance your intelligence, and gain a boost in your education. A young college participant named James Gregory shows qualities of selflessness, shyness, and has a drive for academic success, which are the ideal factors in anyone who would want to take a MOOC. Gregory’s selflessness, and willingness to help others are major contributions of taking a MOOC. MOOCs have “bonafide study groups or social sessions”as Laura Pappano, the author of “The Year of the MOOC” puts it (27). According to Pappano MOOCs are lectures that make you feel like you’re spying on a class from the back of the room…”(Pappano 24) Although Gregory will still be learning just as much as in a regular classroom atmosphere, he will not have to deal with the pressure of everyone being there. Gregory would be a great participant for a MOOC, it would be a great way for him to learn a little extra simply by watching an online video. Gregory “has the persistence of a little glob of peanut butter… this drive has enabled [him] to achieve academic success... “ (15). Gregory could get an extra push into complete success, but on the down side, some classmates “lack a common knowledge base and educational background,” says Pappano(32). Although this does not apply to all students, Gregory may be so far ahead than other students that the person grading his assignment may be at lower standards than Gregory. Despite this he can execute his task to help those students. MOOCs would be the best way for James Gregory to enhance his education, and get ahead of the others in his class. MOOCs are the future of our education system. Many people don’t take MOOCs because they don’t think that it is right for them.
