In the story, The Pearl and in today’s society there are a lot of things that people have gained and lost. In the book and in today’s society, there are ways that people can hurt one another. I think that was bad how Kino and Juana were treated by the doctor. I also think that it is bad how we are treating people that aren’t the way we are, or that look different from each other.
The theme of The Pearl is how money changes who you are. I think that is the theme because of how Kino and Juana have changed toward each other and to their family. “Kino sees Juana leaving the house with something in her hand and goes after her, he finds the pearl in her hand and she is going to throw it back to the sea, but Kino stops her by punching and kicking her”(Steinbeck 59). Before Kino and Juana found the pearl, they were just people that lived on the outside of the town without any power.
Some of the characters gained money and it changed them because they thought that they could do whatever they want.When they had gained they money they also had gained power. With the pearl they thought that it was worth a lot of money which would give them power. It can change people because losing and gaining power and wealth will affect who you are as a person, because you think that you own everything. Gaining power affects Kino and Juana because they think that they will have everything that makes them better. Losing power is hard for most of us because then no one will listen to you. “Because of the pearl Kino and Juana are walking to the capital for a better life but on the way there they are getting tracked and the trackers hear the baby and think he is a coyote and shot at him and then the pearl loses its color”(Steinbeck
