The Pearl was written by John Steinbeck in 1947.
This type of book is known as a novella. This means that it is a short novel or a long short story.
The genre is parable or allegory. These are stories that usually have a hidden moral or political meaning within them.
The book sets place in a small village in La Paz. La Paz is on the Coast of The Baja Peninsula.
John Steinbeck was inspired to write The Pearl after visiting La Paz. Here, pearls from the sea are valued more highly than freshwater pearls.

They kept criticizing the pearl by saying how it was not a beautiful color and it was not that shiny. Again, Kino began to hear the song of evil. He did not end up selling his pearl. Kino told them that he would go to the capital to see what the true value was. Juana did not like what the pearl was turning Kino into, so later that night, she took the pearl, and was about to throw it in to the ocean. Kino caught her and hit her so he could get the pearl back.
She forgave him, but told him how she did not like what the pearl was doing to him. He disagreed and got very upset. They started to go back home, but Kino heard someone coming. Kino was worried that the person was going to try to steal the pearl. To stop them, Kino hid and suddenly attacked them. The pearl was affecting him to a point where Kino killed the man. Immediately, their family left the village. They knew that hunters would soon be coming after him. The hunters are men that are excellent at tracking down anyone and

The hunters shot into the distance when they heard the noise. The shot hit Coyotito, killing him. Kino was near the hunters already, so he slowly kept getting closer and closer to them. He was very sneaky and suddenly attacked the hunters. He gave it his all, as he knew what had just happened to his son. He was brutal, but swift, killing all the hunters. Juana and Kino did not speak, they just looked at each other and began to walk back to the village. It was a very long and tiring walk, but they kept moving as Juana was still carrying Coyotito in her arms.
