I read several books during the summer, and the book The Pearl, which was

written by my favorite author John Steinbeck, had enthralled me. The story is about

the main character Kino, an Indian pearl diver lives with his wife Juana, and his son

Coyotito. One day, his son gets stung by the scorpion and needs treatment; meanwhile

Kino finds a pearl, which is the savior to his family. Unfortunately, the pearl not

only does not help him, but causes lots of tragedies. Kino realizes the pearl is evil

and throw it back into the ocean. The book conveys many different main ideas, but

the most interesting theme to me is greediness, because covetousness tend to be in

Undoubtedly, greediness is destructive because it turns a hardworking man into

a violent demon. “She leaped forward and saw that one was Kino and the other a

stranger with dark shiny fluid leaking from his throat...A dead man in the path and

Kino’s knife, dark bladed beside him convinced her...(Steinbeck 67).” Because of the

pearl, Kino causes numerous calamities. As the quote explains, greediness not only

drives him to hit his wife but also leads to the death of another person. Had Kino not

have the luck to find the pearl, there would not be so many unfortunate.

Another evidence that states that greed is the force of destruction is when Juana

believes the pearl is the origin for the family tragedies. “ “This thing is evil,” she

cried harshly. “This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us,”(Steinbeck 43).” Juana

actually knows that the pearl will finally become evil, and destroy the whole family.

Unluckily, Kino does not realize that the pearl will cause misfortune behind its

material wealth in the beginning. If Kino understands the evilness of the pearl, he

might just throw it back and live with his lovely family, instead of losing his only, and

When most people wake up they hope something good will fall upon them, but most don’t think of the burden that might lurk behind the blessing. This statement could be used as the moral for John Steinbeck’s book The Pearl. The Pearl is a story of a fisherman named Kino whom found a pearl beyond price and doesn’t at the moment understand the dangers that might result from it.
