The Pearl Theme Essay

The story Pearl by John Steinbeck takes place on the California Peninsula. Kino’s kid Coyotito got stung by a scorpion and he needs a doctor but his parents Kino and Juana don’t have the money. Kino then finds the great pearl of the world in the sea and he thinks of the things he could do with it and get. The big theme of this story is don't let greed get to you. Kino shows this theme throughout the story and this pearl messed up his life since he let the greed of it get to him. I think that greed is the theme if this story because Kino beats his wife up over the greed he had for the pearl. Also he wanted to walk so far and endanger his family and his life to get the money he wanted for the pearl. Then his son coyotito gets shot by a tracker all because he wanted the money for the pearl. One quote from this story that shows that the theme is greed is is when kino says “We are going to the Capital.” On this long trip to the capital he puts his and his family’s life on the line for the money he thinks the pearl can get him. But that is not the case because Kino doesn't really want to have power he really wants money so he can get things for him and his family and money deals more with greed. In the book pearl John Steinbeck uses a lot of symbols to show what the character is thinking about or it shows how the character feels. One of the symbols is the family song at first Kino feels ok when he hears it but close to then end when he hears it he gets bad feelings. John uses numerous symbols in the pearl. Kino does not listen to his family all of the time and he just lets the greed get to him. Juana as tryed to talk to him about getting rid of the pearl bet he just starts yelling at her. Also Juan Tomas his brother tried to tell Kino to throw the pearl away or give it to someone else so they could deal with the evil part of the
