The Pearl Symbolism

Who knew a pearl could cause so much trouble? The Pearl was written by John Steinbeck. The main characters are Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. The Pearl takes place in La Paz, Mexico about the family life of Kino, his wife Juana, and their son Coyotito. A scorpion crawls onto Coyotito’s shoulder and Stings him. Kino searches desperately to find a Pearl on his canoe. Later on in the story Kino’s family get in a lot trouble with the village people because they want that Pearl. The Pearl cost them their house and their safety in the village. What the Pearl symbolizes is hope. What the Pearl means to Kino in different stages of the novel is that in the beginning when he found this Pearl he wanted to get married in a church and have

The author says this quote that tells us when Kino looked on the surface of the Pearl he started imaging everything he could have now that he has the pearl. On page 19 it states “in the surface of the great pearl he could see dream forms.” How this symbolizes hope is that now that Kino has the Pearl he sees hope that everything will turn out good for his family. Determined to get that pearl no matter the cost. As it states on page 56 in chapter 4 " Kino looked out into the darkness and then he stepped outside. Juana heard the little rush, the grunting struggle, and the blow. She froze with terror for a moment, Juana dropped her stone, and she put her arms around Kino and helped him to his feet and supported him into the house.” That man who attacked Kino was filled greed. He wanted the pearl no matter the cost.

In retrospect the pearl symbolizes hope because now that Kino has the pearl he can see hope that everything will turn out good for his family. In the beginning the Pearl meant wealth to Kino that he can provide more for his family to procure a better life. In the end Kino thought of the pearl as death because it cause a lot of trouble and a tragic death of Coyotito which made him throw the pearl back in the ocean so it can never harm his family again.
