The Pearl is a symbol that changes from a wonderful gift that will save this poor family and give them a better life, then changes to this object that brings evil, death, and hate into the lives of a family, with a lust for a new life, and values that help them see the evil in this Pearl. In the book the pearl shows the way that greed, hope, and family values can change a family, the way they live and how there feelings and emotions of a family are damaged by one object. At first the pearl gave hope Kino and his family because he would be able to give them a better and easier life. As Kino continued to think about the life he could have with the pearl, Kino realized he had all these dreams and ideas that because of the pearl could come true. …show more content…
He needed money for his son to go to the doctor, him and his family went out and had hope that they could find the pearl that might be, like explained in the book, "But in the song there was a secret little inner song, hardly perceptible, but always there, sweet and secret and clinging, almost hiding in the counter-melody, and this was the Song of the Pearl That Might Be, for every shell thrown in the basket might contain a pearl.” The pearl symbolizes that Kino could save his family from the poor and uneducated life and he held onto that hope when he went looking for the great pearl, as said, “The shell was partly open, for the overhang protected this ancient oyster, and in the lip-like muscle Kino saw a ghostly gleam, and then the shell closed down.
