Greed can definitely control a man and any other person. John Steinbeck, the famous American author, wrote the novella The Pearl. The Pearl is a very interesting book that is a man that finds the pearl of the world and hopes it leads him to great fortune. Kino figures out the hard way that he was wrong. Throughout the book Kino changes his important things in life change as he copes with resolving his internal conflicts. In the beginning of the book he values his family and boat. “It was very good - Kino closed his eyes again to listen to his music.” (Steinbeck, 1-2) “It was a morning like other mornings and yet perfect among mornings.” (Steinbeck, 3) His music in this quote refers to his family. Although the morning was just a morning it shows how perfect it is because of his family. “He went and touched the bow tenderly as he always did.” (Steinbeck, 15) The bow helps him remind himself of how much he cares for the boat. Him touching the bow tenderly shows how much he loves the boat. Kino finds the pearl makes him change his mind quickly about what the importance in life is. …show more content…
“After all a thousand pesos was not to be thrown away.” (Steinbeck, 50) “Only yesterday we had nothing.” (Steinbeck, 50) This proves that his overall importance in life is changing. Kino is more of a materialistic man. “New cloths, married in the church, rifle, and an education for his son.” (Steinbeck, 24-26) This is showing what Kino wants to buy with his fortune.
