Without speaking Kino and Juana looked at each other and knew now was the time. Silently, Juana reached into her skirt and found the hidden pocket, then she grabbed hold of the round object and pulled it out. She handed it to Kino and he looked at it. Next, Kino pulled the pouch with the pearl out of his shirt pocket and unwrapped it. Then, Kino They started feeling the ground with their hands for a patch of ground free of rocks so that they could dig a hole with their hands. They found one fifteen feet from the mouth of the cave and started to dig, taking turns. They dug about a foot down in twenty minutes and decided that was enough. Then, Kino held up what he thought was the real pearl, unable to tell the difference until he ran it across the fronts of his teeth, feeling for the particular grainy texture that is only found with a real pearl. Then, he placed it in the bottom of the hole, being careful not to drop it. Before filling the hole with dirt, Kino and Juana said a quick prayer to God asking him to protect them and the pearl.
