The Patriot is a historical fiction movie released in 2000 detailing the life of an American family during the Revolutionary War. The main character Benjamin Martin, played by Mel Gibson, is forced into fighting when his loved one’s lives are endangered. This film is directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Robert Rodat. It also stars Chris Cooper, Joely Richardson, and Heath Ledger. Though entertaining and thought provoking, the film drags in places and is unnecessarily long and inaccurately depicts many events in the American Revolutionary War. This movie succeeds in its attempt to entertain audiences, but fails to truthfully demonstrate life as it was in the late eighteenth century.
