Inspiration is everywhere and I found mine in my water bottle. So now that I had a broad topic to begin with, where exactly would I begin? Thinking about the role that an idea as simple as water can play in our lives seemed at first a little daunting, but I started where it impacted me; my water heater. As I wrote about my water heater that broke and flooded my basement with water, I began to think about how we must always control water in order to appreciate it, “We run to get out of the rain, yet spend thousands on sterilizing it [water] and filling up concrete pools to swim in.” So, from a seemingly unimportant detail in my mundane life, I was able to infer a philosophical statement that led to further musings that seem completely unrelated. Near that “dot” or idea on my metaphorical scatter plot I saw the selfish first world ideals in swimming pools and broken hot water …show more content…
It seemed so random I felt like it was, essentially pointless but I continued to slog through the process and when I was finished I began to review the six pages all written in baby blue ink. Searching through them I looked for any real conclusions and really there weren’t any, but upon closer inspection I began to notice a pattern. First I would reference how water, in the question being asked would relate to me, such as when the question was, “what hidden role does it play?” my first response was to think about how the pen I was holding was most likely shipped on an ocean barge, without the water or ocean my pen would have gotten here and probably have looked completely different. From there my mind jumped ship to the next dot; how it related to others. My mind wandered to what our world would look like if the oceans did not exist. “America would have never been a place for people to go to who were looking for freedom,” because without the separation of the continents, North America would not have been the safe haven for immigrants seeking religious freedom. In the next step I drew my line of best fit with a conclusion sentence, “So, I guess a hidden role that water played was separating America from the rest of the world and letting it become a starting point for modern democracy.” My conclusion here seems like a huge stretch: a lack of ocean would cause
