He knew what pleased God and God had given him supernatural insight and understanding of what the kingdom of God should look like in earth. Unity and harmony among the church is essential to the growth or the church. If the church would unity with a purpose of Glorifying God there is no limit to what we can do. Paul’s pastoral agenda is first evident when he explains the cause of his thanksgiving. In recalling that he prays for the Philippians often and that he does so with joy he introduces a dominant theme in the letter. Their “partnership (koinonia) in the gospel from the first day until now” is the object of Paul’s joy and the source of his thanksgiving. As one whose task is “the defense and confirmation of the gospel” Paul does not stand alone. This partnership includes not only the gifts that the Philippians have sent but also their participation in his tribulations their prayers for him, and the partnership of love that unites the community. Paul’s sees his relationship with the body of believes as a partnership both working to share the gospel and live it out as a community of convent believes. Paul understood the gospel can and will make people better. Today modern pastor Thompson is correct in his statement the modern church wants the pastor to be skilled in so many areas often times to shepherding and overseeing of souls is the last thing on the schedule. There are many modern day attempts to free the pastor up to only teach and preach leaving but the soul care to be done by someone else. Therefore many pastors don’t even know their congregations. Paul loved God, His church and the people. The pastor must find a way to do all three if they want to adapt Paul’s pastoral leadership to your leadership.
