No one can ever forget history. Nobody can ever forget 9/11 or the holocaust. However, when we hold on to history for too long, this can lead to a lack of empathy or other negative consequences. In the Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury examines people that have lost and grieved for their loved ones. Through the characterization of the different characters, such as John Black and the LaFarge couple, in the book , and from other global events in our society, such as the 9/11 attacks, came to be true: when one gets too caught up in the past, then one’s judgement can be impaired. An example of this behavior is found in the Article “Islamophobia: The Stereotyping and Prejudice Towards Muslims Since 9/11” by Nicolas Brooklier. This article explains the fact that American people discriminated against Islamic people after the 9/11 attacks. Brooklier writes, “Ever since the horrific events of September 11, 2001 (the day our nation was under attack), the Muslim community has been under strict scrutiny when it came to people’s fears and paranoia”(Brooklier). The American citizen’s discrimination against the Islamic people started in 2001 and, as of 2015, has still continued. For example, TSA agents inspect more Islamic people, which is a sign of increased racial profiling and prejudice. As described by the quote, no one can ever forget the day our nation was under attack. However, millions of American Citizens are unable to let it go, resulting in prejudiced judgements on Islamic people. Brooklier then goes on to explain how political leaders such as Donald Trump has kept this stereotyping alive and increased it to a bigger extent. Brooklier then concludes, “In some ways, when we hear of a terrorist attack, we automatically think of Islamic people who hold the ideology of seeing America being in ruins (destroyed). However, American society doesn’t realize that these radicals (extremists) can come from any background or religion”(Brooklier). The word “automatically” implies that Americans make an impulsive judgement. They immediately start thinking that it is Islamic People that start these terrorist attacks without realizing that anybody can be a terrorist.
