The first similarity is the narrator’s character. In both the novel and the film the narrator is naive, sensitive, very shy, does not have enough experience in life and she is from an ordinary family. Also she always feels fear and tension when something wrong happens or when she treats with strangers. For example, in chapter 1 she knocks over the pool of flowers, the waiter and Maxim come to her table to help her. Then she feels nervous and does not know how to deport herself with him. The second point of comparison is in Mrs. Van Hopper character. In both the novel and film Mrs. Van Hopper treats the narrator badly and her self-confidence is the same. Also, she is a wealthy woman in the same time noisy, gossipy and vulgar woman. For instance, when she hears about the narrator engagement, maybe she feels jealous and says to the narrator that you make a big mistake that you will bitterly regret. The last point of comparison is about the narrator’s fancy dress dance. In both the novel and film the narrator does not know what to wear for the party and feels worried about that. Then Ms. Danvers suggests to wear like Rebecca dress that is in the picture in the hall. After that she wears the dress and wants to surprise Maxim. The first point of difference is Maxim De Winter never considering suicide. In the novel, the action of suicide does not happen and is transformed to the narrator first time meet Maxim at the hotel restaurant. On the other hand, in the film Maxim is standing at the edge of a cliff want to jump off. Then the narrator prevents and stops him. The second point of difference is Rebecca’s death is much more graphic in the novel. In the novel Maxim killed her by shots with a pistol and her blood is everywhere. However, in the film he strikes her and she falls down into a sharp thing in the cottage. My final point of difference is Mrs. Danvers’ fate is left ambiguous. In the novel Mrs. Danvers takes her possessions and left Manderley since nobody had seen her when she leaves. Maxim expects that she played a role in burning Manderley. But in the film shows that Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca’s bedroom, looking out of the window as the house burns around her. These are my three differences between the novel and
