Roles Of Music In Worship

My essay is formed with two parts: my view of the role of music in worship and the required qualities of music leadership. To begin with, with respect to the role of worship music, I think that music is a way for us to praise God with our whole body, mind, and soul. God is the One who deserves our praising because He is our creator, savior, and sustainer. In this regard, music is an effective and indispensable instrument to show our gratitude to God. Besides, we can offer our prayer to God through singing hymns and playing musical instruments. So, music is a good way for us to speak our mind toward God in worship. However, I do not think that all kinds of music can be used as a way to worship God. That is because the purpose of worship music is to please God. Of course, we can enjoy pleasure given from God by communicating with God through music. Yet, it is a just natural by-product rather than the essential reason of worship music. Thus, worship music should be differentiated from secular music due to the distinction of its ultimate purpose.

First reason is that participating in music ministry is very burdensome work. As music is an crucial element of worship, everyone speaks out their different opinions on worship music. There are compliments as well as criticisms. So, the leaders of music ministries should maintain balance so that all members of the ministries are not in disturbance. Second reason is that the music ministry is a group work. So, team work is very important. In that sense, the leaders have a responsibility not only to look after every member of music ministry but also to make all members help one another. Thus, leadership is necessary to be a good leader of the music

The article The Importance of Music Education written by Alexis Kalivretenos, a trumpet player with a Bachelors Degree in music education from the University of Maryland, is a compelling article that argues the importance of keeping music in the core curriculum of education systems across the nation. Kalivertenos uses a combination of ethos pathos and logos to argue that music should not only be kept in the curriculum but actually benefits the other subjects in the curriculum. Kalivertenos states that music has always taken a back seat to other core subjects such as math and reading. She backs this up with a ten-year study of high school students which states “students in music classes receive higher scores on standardized tests than students with little to no musical involvement.”…

Lou Rawls, an American singer, once acknowledged music as the “greatest [form of] communication in the world” (“Brainy Quote,” n.d., para.14). Music is a way for people to express themselves and their feelings comfortably without being ashamed or embarrassed. While these are positive contributions to personal development, there is much more that music provides for people. The article, “Is Music is the Key to Success?” by Joanne Lipman, addresses how music can help people communicate, think, and feel better in a professional job that may have no correlation to music.…

But, it’s not just the previous drum majors I was influenced by; Nick, Michael, Vy, Mr. Sebastian, and my wonderful section leader Sarah also inspired me too. However, many previous drum majors had set the standards at a high level and it's my privilege and responsibility to maintain the tradition but at the same time help the band improve through words of encouragements. Even though I may not have a recognizable leadership position prior to this, one reason out of many reasons why I would be a successful leader is that I am very understanding with the people I’m working with. I know how to deal with problems that band members usually face because I was in the same position as they were, therefore, I will try my best to help them with any problems they might have as well as constantly learning from my fellow bandos to make self improvements. My goal is to motivate and inspire every member to keep pushing and practicing because if they strive for it, they will become successful.…

Social Work with Groups course is giving me more insight to the other courses that I have taken previously and some of those that I am currently rolled in such as Social Work with Families and Community Development. After reading the textbook and the discussions in class, the theories of group counseling, viewing groups through multicultural lens, leadership qualities and functions, co-facilitator and group development stood out for me and broaden my perception into Social Work as a profession. The first thing that caught my attention this time is that, theories of counseling are also applicable to group counseling. I learned about the theories in my social work practice class last year. This show how important the theories are to me as an emerging social worker.…
