“Don’t forget to put up the flyers I gave you guys!” Benton Harbor is such a small city that I basically knew everyone, and I wanted everybody to help me celebrate my high school graduation. Not only were my schoolmates invited to my party, but also the whole community because my open house and after party were going to be the biggest events of the year. Mine wasn’t an ordinary graduation party because we were having an after party too with catered food and live hip hop performances. My boyfriend was even going to rap a song about me. I was so excited, and I just knew everything would be a success.
Each year on my birthday, I begged to have a big party, but my mom always said to wait. I didn’t understand this because I had good grades and I never got into trouble such as drinking or smoking, so I thought I deserved a party. Even though my parents gave me everything I wanted from the latest clothes to every new electronic gadget that came out, I felt I was missing out on fun by not having parties. Noticing my friends having birthday sleepovers, skating and bowling parties always made me feel like I was less important. I just wanted to have parties like a normal kid.
