Our non-profit is still in the developmental stages, and lacks proper funding for a board of directors. Having a board of directors is required for registered non-profits, and since we are not registered a board of directors for governance is not an option. Activities for All’s advisory board will have the similar responsibilities to a board of directors. To make sure advisory board members act honestly they sign a contract stating that advisory board members must act honestly and in the best interest for the community. This contract also means if an advisory board member notices something that has not been discussed, that they as an individual must bring the issue to the attention of the advisory board and founders.
Our advisory board currently has 11 members on it; the board is a diverse group of people coming from different areas in the community. The first Board member is the principle of John M King elementary school. A principle brings a certain skill set that is beneficial to our advisory board. The principle brings managerial experience, as well as a close connection to youth and the ability to get in contact with parents throughout the community. Importantly the principle allows our not for profit to gain insight on what programs are already offered by the school, and what programs are wanted if funding was available. Particularly the lawyer, business owners and the not for profit professor provide input regarding organizational rules and policies. Having these individuals with experience with governance will make sure as an organization we are running effectively and within the law. Three of the created policies that have already been set by the founders from the guidance of the advisory board are related to conflict of interest, how the founders will be held accountable for decisions, and the prevention of private inurement.
