Some people believe that money and greed seem to be the root of all evil. This in fact may be true, but, what causes people to behave in such a manner to where money controls their behavior? Manipulating and deceiving people out of their hard earned money is very frowned upon but somehow people get away with it and it still happens like nothing. Money and greed bring out the darkest part out of people’s souls and make them think in such an evil devilish way that they have never thought before. Some people will do anything for money and commit such crimes to the point where they do not care as long as their pockets are looking very healthy. In “The Pardoner’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer from the Canterbury Tales, he tells a story about a corrupt …show more content…
He states that, “At once the three young rioters began / To run, and reached the tree, and there they found / A pile of golden florins on the ground, / New-coined, eight bushels of them as they thought. / No longer was it Death those fellows sought” (lines 190-194). The original plan is to find Death and to kill him as soon as they encounter him. That plan changes as soon as they find all of those golden coins lying by the tree, they no longer want to find Death but instead find a way to take it back to their homes because their greedy unperceptive minds get in the way of the original plan. The story takes a little twist when one of the three rioters tells another: “Now let me tell you where your profit lies; / You know our friend has gone to get supplies / And here’s a lot of gold that is to be / Divided equally amongst us three. / Nevertheless, if I could shape things thus / So that we shared it out – the two of us - / Wouldn’t you take it as a friendly act?” (lines 231-237). The greediness of one of the rioters hit him as soon as the youngest one leaves for town to fetch bread and wine for the other two rioters. Instead of splitting it equally in between the three of them, he now wants to split it in between him and the other rioter that stays behind by the tree to protect the treasure. The greed is getting into the rioter’s heads and now there are no limits on how they are going to act in order to split the wealth they encounter as they wish. A critic states, “Or did he realize that there was gold there that would result in their finding death, but not how they expected? If we take the last option to be true, the old man deliberately sent the three 'brothers' to the gold, knowing how it would corrupt them and that their love for money would result in their deaths” (King). King is insisting that the Old Man in “The Pardoner’s Tale” knows what he is doing when he sends the three rioters to the

There are two ways that the reader can interpret death; one is the idea that death is an actual person who kills people, which is the easiest way to interpret it. In this interpretation, death can be blamed for leaving the gold which resulted in the rioter’s demise. In the story the three men venture off into the woods to find death, them stumble upon an old man who claimed to have seen him. In this scenario we can infer that death is a real person who left the gold for the three rioters to find. Death was well aware of the three men’s greed and used it as a method of destruction.…

6), and this is the overarching theme in both the Pardoner’s and the Wife of Bath’s tale. Chaucer uses this abundance of greed to teach the reader of the necessity of humility and empathy. The Pardoner and the Wife of Bath can be seen as similar in the fact that they both are representations of the abundance of greed in everyone’s life, but the Wife of Bath makes a distinction between the two by her reaction towards her faults. At the end of each tale, Chaucer leaves the reader with a subconscious question of whether or not avarice dictates their…

The pardoner was a man filled with greed and discontent for everything and everyone including himself. Chaucer showed this several times throughout the pardoner’s prologue and through the telling of his tale with the use of dramatic irony. It is the same today with all of these quickly rising stars. This modern generation is quick to place a person on a pedestal without truly looking at who they are. Although Chaucer and the pardoner would like for the reader to believe that they are smarter than the unknowing crowd it seems that the majority does not realize that they are already in the…

I am a reader who see beyond writer’s words and understand the hidden interpretation of an author and use that to understand the context and the big picture that the writer is presenting to us as the modern reader. The Merchants’ Tale by Geoffrey Chaucer is one of my favourite pre-1900 poetic. The symbolism of blindness of January within the book and May deceiving him right before his eye and even Gods conflicting over them. It’s very ironic and childish play but through the journey we understand the aspect of pre-1900s century. It was wonderful reading and understanding the middle English language and getting used to as it’s very close to the modern English.…

Sadly, Chaucer dies before completing the story. The purpose of The Canterbury Tales is to satirize the corruption within the church for future changes.…

In Geoffrey Chaucer’s collections of stories, The Canterbury Tales, a group of pilgrims traveling to the shrine of St. Thomas Beckett tell each other stories containing different moral connotations. One such fable, The Pardoner’s Tale, is narrated by a licensed pardoner, who explains the evils of one of his main faults: greed; a vice that has indeed made him wealthy, but has done so at the expense of others. The story, although directed towards greed, is also important as a warning against any characteristic which seems to benefit us, but in reality is a vice which can have harmful effects on us and the people in our lives. Similar to the pardoner , I am able to identify a great failing which I have, although it is not the same weakness.…
