The Paramount Case Essay

The first big effect that the Paramount case had on the film industry was that it leveled the playing field for all production companies. The number of theaters owned by Paramount was staggering. The owned 933 studios the next closest was RKO with 187.(p.195) Another effect was that theaters actually had to put forth effort in making their movies. Before the Paramount Case all a theater had to give bank was a movie as a collateral versus post Paramount case actual collateral such as theater. It made Paramount less of a monopoly and allowed others and mainly television producers to expand and give people the freedom of choice. I think this practice is still very much used .An example of it still being used is with an actor and comedian named George Carlin. George was a very outspoken and anti-establishment person who did not in all relative terms did not have much success and was not give a lot of opportunity to work. He was also not even mentioned during the Academy Awards after his death. To me that shows the influence the Hollywood management has on the industry as a whole. Both of these things major events leading up to Hollywood in the 1950’s I believe changed Hollywood forever. It made it so that like most business everyone really has an opportunity to be great, to make the film industry more of an art than a business. The blacklist altered the way filmmaking was done as the for that time period they used it as a way to keep people quiet and make the films they wanted them to be made. It may still be in the industry today but has really quietly disappeared except for certain cases as my example of the aforementioned George
