The Paragraph Group Analysis

When one thinks of an alcoholics anonymous group or any other delinquent sounding organization one might construe the typical junkie persona along with all of the negative connotations that accompany it. For the instance of "The Paragraph Group" at the 13th street clubhouse this is not the case. From young to old and from all walks of life alcoholism had seemed to have plagued more than just this junkie ideology. The meeting in particular that I observed opened with a prayer of serenity. The 12 step program is greatly intertwined within religion. As the meeting progressed everyone began to share their stories of alcoholism, or drug addiction. Each individuals story ranged widely but the central theme of each person's story was the theme of a new found excitement. These individuals were getting their life back, and for the first time in a long time these …show more content…
For the sake of privacy the AA members named is not included. This woman spoke of her history of drinking and the alienation it has costed her in regard to her friends and family much like my mother has been afflicted with the consequences of a life revolving around drugs and alcohol. The life of an addict is in all senses one that is numbed and separated from reality where the only real thing that carries any weight in the mind of an addict is solely what that individual is addicted too. As disheartening as the above statement may seem, this woman has shown me that not all hope is lost. She ended her story with saying that after months in rehabilitation, weekly meetings to the paragraph group and complete sobriety she got a call from her son wanting to come back into his mother's life. The emotion expressed by this newly sober woman has shown me that anyone can overcome the addictions they're afflicted with and to never give up on someone just because things seem to be

Since its origin in the 1930’s, the twelve steps program has helped people recover from alcoholism and drug use. Nowadays, we can see variations to the program, such as targeting other addictions from specific drugs to co-dependent relationships. Something that I always did not appreciate about the twelve steps program is that it was based on Christianity and God. That makes some people not wanting to attend because the meetings do not match their values. Also, for ethnic minorities it becomes difficult to attend an AA meeting, based on the mainstream culture.…

My family, was on the verge of destruction, as I chose recovery, before my spouse, and suffered the same separation portrayed in the film. Today, I thank my Higher Power, that he intervened, and my wife conceded to attend an South Orange County rehabilitation program where she was exposed to, and chose recovery. A fact which resulted in both of us enrolling at Saddleback, and making recovery in AA…

They were 55 members present at the meeting I attended and most of them were men. One of the speakers spoke about how he faces many obstacles everyday but with a good support system is what keeps him going. He stated that his life was miserable when he used to drink and he realized that he was hurting his family; he felt like he didn’t know who he was anymore, his family didn’t know who he was and that was painful for him. The AA group is what’s helping him stay sober and finding himself.…

The Perfect Paragraph Fifteen Kisteesha from Whitefish, Mt with dreadlocks got expelled for having dreadlocks. The superintendent told her that she was not allowed back until she did something about it due to the distraction. I’d tell them then send the people with artificial hair color home as well because that’s distracting, and the people that have interesting smells, and the greasy hair look… Because honestly you really can’t focus with someone that is sitting by you with a bright hair color or a smelly smell. I think they’re overstepping it because in a way they’re taking her education away, and saying she has to change herself in order to be “normal” to come back and attend their school. They’re also making her become someone that…

Early in the inception of AA, both Dr. Bob and Bill made it clear that no one can know the true nature of alcoholism as well as another suffering alcoholic (Big Book, 2001). The inherent capacity for depth of empathy, evident in sharing one 's experience, strength and hope, with another person who is suffering from the same problems, is a strong foundation for the much needed support necessary for recovery to take place. For this project, I attended two different meetings. One was an open meeting of alcoholics anonymous and the other was a closed meeting of crystal meth…

A women, Mary, came up to us and discussed how since it was our first meeting we would have to discuss our problems with her prior to joining the meeting with everyone else. We went to the table with her and told her about our uncle and how he has lost control of his drinking and how his wife keeps kicking him out, but he always somehow returns. It felt good to express how we felt to someone who understands because it wasn 't so hush hush like it is with our parents.
