Child malnutrition involves both undernutrition and a growing health issue with obesity. The rate of childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past few decades (Odgen & Carroll, 2010). Especially children from low-income family are at great risk for under nutrition and overweight suffering from food insecurity and facing limited access to healthy food choices. This is a significant health issue because nutrition and healthy eating habits in childhood are closely related to health and human capital outcomes in young adults.

However, children in low-income settings might not get sufficient amount of nutrients from their diet. Food insecurity is also a contributing factor to this issue. Food insecurity happens when the food consumption of individuals was reduced and their eating habits were disturbed due to the lack of money. Rates of food insecurity are substantially higher than the national average for households with incomes near or below the federal poverty line, households with children headed by single women or single men, and black and Hispanic households.
