The Parables In The New Testament

At the beginning of this semester, I did not know a lot of background information or details regarding the New Testament. I always knew about stories such as the parables in Matthew, but never got the opportunity to grasp and really dive into the rest of the New Testament books of the Bible. However, taking New Testament with Dr. Hamrick has changed and really improved my outlook and understanding of the New Testament as a whole tremendously. I now have truly realized that the New Testament is more than just the second part of the Bible, but that it is the fulfillment of the covenant in the Old Testament. In the beginning of the year, we studied and really dissected each of the synoptic gospels. With this, I realized that these were not just stories and personal encounters …show more content…
I also learned about interpreting and understanding what types of genre each book of the New Testament is to better understand its context and apolication. As of right now, I feel like a have a much better understanding of how each gospel is communicated and what makes them unique from each other. I got to experience New Testament materials such as historical, religious, cultural, and literary backgrounds that have to do with each book of the New Testament. Another large aspect I have gained from taking this course is learning about the reasons and intended audience and existing cultures that each of these book were written for. With this new understanding of important background information, I can interpret these book in a better manner and get more out of each book. For example, 3 John is a book that I did quite a of bit of research on. With this I have realized that this book was written to an individual. Knowing this I can better interpret the meaning of 3 John and be able to apply it to my

The New Testament in the Christian Bible is a collection of historical writings recording the ‘good news’ of our saviour Jesus Christ - his death, resurrection, ascension and his teachings in the world. Testament comes from the Latin word, testamentum meaning covenant or agreement. The canon of the New Testament is composed by twenty seven different books that were written from about 50 A.D. to 125 A.D. The first four books of the New Testament are the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which retell the story of Jesus in various ways. The New Testament contains the Acts Of Apostles which continues the gospel of Luke announcing the expansion of the early christian church.…

One of the major pillars of white supremacy that Butler continuously depicts in Parable of the Sower is the U. S’s capitalistic commodification of minorities in the U.S. Butler demonstrates this theme through the organizations and characters. Butler first raises the topic of slavery through KSF, which is a multinational company that sends out advertisements for skilled workers, ensuring safety and security in exchange for work. KSF plans to gain possession over water, energy, and agriculture in the entire Southwest, which ultimately gives them more power. Olamina says, “Anyone KSF hired would have a hard time living on the salary offered. In not very much time, I think the new hires would be in debt to the company.…

The second foundational difference between the two parables is the audience for whom they were written. Mark 12:1-12 was written for the early Christian church. It, along with the rest of the gospel, proclaims the gospel of Christ and teaches that the old ways of redemption are no longer; Jesus, the son, and the church body are the means of reaching God. In Mark 12:1-12 the tenants are unable to give the fruit directly to God. The fruit must be delivered by servants and when the servants are unsuccessful, the son.…

During this semester my way of viewing reading and understanding them has definitely been tested. I feel that the goal of this class was to show us how many beliefs are connected. Whether they are of Greek, Roman, or Gospel backgrounds. The way we transitions from each reading, and were required to bring it all together during our discussions really help me get a better understand of these readings. I would define the learning structure of this class as Platonic.…

Biblical Allusions “Viva La Vida” alludes to a parable given by Jesus about a fool who built his house on sand and a man who built his house on rock. The song says “And I discovered that my castles stand. Upon pillars of salt, pillars of sand” because in the Bible the fool did not listen to Jesus and built his house on sand and it fell when rain came unlike the man’s house built on rock (salt). Pillars of salt is also a reference to Genesis 19:26, in which Lot’s wife was told if she looked back she would be turned into a pillar of salt, which she did and was, as promised, turned into a pillar of salt.…

Looking back at my original interview questions, it is somewhat amazing to realize how much I have learned regarding Jesus of Nazareth and the times in which he lived in. It is extremely apparent that the original thoughts and ideas I had about Jesus were based on predominantly Western evangelical concepts and culture. As the course moved forward, these ideas shifted to a more historical and accurate perspective. Overall, the information and assignments provided within this class allow for one, including myself, to effectively improve upon their understanding of Jesus of Nazareth. To begin with, I would like to discuss some of the new knowledge I was exposed to throughout the course.…

Throughout the New Testament, parables are facilitated by Jesus in order to get a certain message across to the people. Although the parables often times have the same core ideas, the different words and tones used in each of the different gospels completely change the way the parables are read. In the mustard seed parable, Matthew, Mark, Luke and Thomas all have the same essence, but the different expressions make them very distinctive. Through comparing the similarities in differences between these four Gospels, it can be deducted that similar sources and references were used in constructing the parable.…

Matthew 24:45-51 describes the story with a servant whose master is away. The parable has two outcome; if the servant is faithful and do what he was assigned for then it is good; however, if the servant choose to disobey and “beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards” then he will be punished severely (NIV Bible, Matthew 24:49). Jesus was giving a warning for Christian underneath the actions of the servant. In the story, the master is Jesus himself, the Son of Man, but in this moment, he has not return as the savior yet.…

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through all seven chapters of Philip Yancey’s book “The Bible Jesus Read.” It felt as though I was sitting across form the writer just soaking in all he had to say. After reading commentaries and Bible dictionaries, this book gave a fresh perspective on the Old Testament. Yancey was not interested in the nitty gritty details of the Old Testament like date and author of books, but rather focusing on the point and the big picture.…

Goal I The first goal of the program was to “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate study or careers in which psychological training is relevant”(). Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…

    Parables In Christianity

Jesus’s parables teach Christians how to live faithfully in the presence of God for the duration of their lives. Through these parables, Christians are taught how to respect, appreciate, and love themselves as well as others. However, the big problem in Christianity is that many people tend to forget about these teachings and commit actions that are against what the parables teach. On the other hand, if authentic parable-based Christianity were to exist, it would be a fully inclusive community that promotes positivity among its members as well as others. Being fully inclusive in a specific group of people will establish a positive mindset and attitude that will carry on to the members of the community.…

Over the course of this semester, I was reminded of different characters from the Bible that I remember learning about from religion class growing up. I was reintroduced to Samuel, Saul, David, Jonathan, and Absalom. Learning about these characters now was different then learning about them when I was younger because I have developed more as a person and now see things differently than before. I was able to make new connections for these biblical characters as well as learn new things from analyzing these characters during our class discussions. Samuel is considered a “miracle child” because his mother Hannah was unable to have children but God answered her prayers and opened her womb and giving birth to Samuel.…

The essential thing I learned in this class is that religion is complicated and cannot be completely understood in a one semester class, not even if it is a fictional religion in a book series. This class has certainly acted as an overview of several religions and how they can be used as inspiration for fictional world building. One of the most complicated topics we covered seemed to be the explanation for the Christian trilogy and whether or not something was dualistic or monotheistic. The idea that multiple beings are just part of a singular being yet still distinct entities in and of themselves is both confusing and complicated. Before this class, I did not know a lot about the apocalyptic traditions in many religions.…
