One area, in which I gained further understanding of story, lay in the presentation of various clips from movies. Although it is important to memorize the material, showing examples of story structure in movies greatly aids in my learning experience. Furthermore, such showing of film clips incites within me a passion to view films by myself and to dissect them for a more through understanding. Near the end of one of the class periods, the professor mentioned the word polysemics. Never encountering this word, I examined it and attempted to understand how this word might aid my story telling mind. Simply, polysemics ,means multiple meanings. As I contemplated the meaning of this word, a plethora of questions arose to the forefront of mind. Should the stories that I tell having a specific meaning? Can the message of my stories mean something different to each individual? Can each individual interpret my story however they see fit? Although I do not know the answer to each question, I do believe that stories can be polysemic; however, one must be careful. For instance, the parables that Jesus told had a specific meanin; however, the crowd’s own experiences altered how they engaged with the story. With my own stories, each individual interacts and mentally engages differently with the various components based on his or her own experiences; however, the message of my story ought to be firm and each individual should attempt to understand the messagethe author is seeking to convey. Each man or woman determining the message of a story for themselves, is simply postmoderinism.
