The Parable Of 'The Lost Sheep'

Improved Essays
The preacher starts preaching a heavy sermon. The pastor’s sermon provides many people in the crowd a visual image. People all over the room shout and feel the word of God about the sermon. The preacher then begins to preach about the Parable of “The Lost Sheep” reminding us that ninety-nine are safe, however, one is not. The preacher repeatedly says, “Come to Jesus. Won’t you come to Jesus?” (Salvation 345). The sermon makes the little girls cry, and easily persuade them to receive salvation. Hughes composes this scene to represent cluelessness. Though a few girls get up and go to the altar, many of the children stay on the mourner’s bench; Hughes stays on the bench. After that, many of the church members began to gather around the children.

Many couples fight when they are mad, angry, or upset. Though this is true, this doesn’t mean the two don’t love each other. Often love isn’t shown at all times, but it is still there. Love can be complicated, and love can not always be as it seems. In the short story, “Penny in the Dust,” written by Ernest Buckler, and in another short story titled, “Lamb to the Slaughter,” done by Roald Dahl, we see in each two characters who obtain a complicated relationship together although they are in love, proving that love isn’t always as it may seem.…

T.S. Eliot’s poem, “The Hollow Men,” reveals the loss of faith in God by veterans after enduring WWI. Eliot suggests that the modern loss of religion creates a desolate and faithless society. Following WWI, the veterans that returned home were faced with the reality that dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, which translates to “it is sweet and honorable to die for one’s country” was not their truth. After witnessing the horrors that took place in the war, the veterans realized that falling for one’s country was not a glamorous gesture. Instead, it left the veterans in a helpless and agnostic state.…

The homily written by Rev. William J. Reese was preached in Minnesota in April of 2012. It is based off of the passage John 3:16. “God so loved the world that he gave his only son begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This homily focuses on many aspects, however, the most important messages being God’s never ending love and the importance of continuous faith/belief. Living an eternal life with God is the end result after receiving His grace.…

    Langston Salvation

The piece is titled “Salvation” because Langston was saved, but not in the typical sense. Therefore, it may be argued that the piece’s title is fitting, yet ironic. Jesus did not save Langston, as one would expect. Rather, Langston “saved” himself, as well as his aunt. Even though Langston never “saw a light”, he saved himself and his aunt from being embarrassed in front of the entire congregation by getting up from the mourners’ bench.…

Through black independent film, Burnett uses the mise-en-scène of Killer of Sheep to depict black female identity in these particular scenes. Burnett successfully transcends and reflects the character’s image in society through the use of everyday matter. The physical lid of the pot is a reflective item, depicting to Stan’s wife a literal image of herself in it. The doll that Stan’s daughter sings to is not only a reflection of her identity and self esteem, but of blackness in a white world. In contrast, Burnett also uses the mise-en-scène to depict black male identity.…

Determining what is real, or fake, comes down to who you are asking, something real to you could be fake to someone else, but that does not mean it is fake. Mitch Hedberg once said, “My fake plants died because I did not pretend to water them”. Although it was said as a joke, it directly correlates with the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. Dick creates a post apocalypse future where humans and androids live together.…

“Lamb to the Slaughter”, a short story written by the celebrated author Roald Dahl, is a story that follows Mary Maloney, a pregnant housewife who had recently found out her husband, a chief detective, was going to leave her. Out of desperation, Mary murders her husband with a frozen leg of lamb and then concealing her wrongdoing and discarding the murder weapon by encouraging the policemen who were investigating the murder to eat it. The most salient idea the author explores is the betrayal; Patrick Maloney's unexplained decision to leave his pregnant wife and then Mary committing the ultimate betrayal when she murders him. Dahl emphasises his ideas and themes employing many literary techniques, including foreshadowing, symbolism and irony. These techniques build a thrilling, black comedy for the reader keeping them on the edge of their seat.…

The main point of “Salvation” is to show the readers Hughes experience of being saved. Being saved is supposed to be a great time where you except Christ into your life, but it was quite the opposite for Hughes. In fact, the first two lines of this story contradict each other, “I was saved from sin when I was going on thirteen. But not really saved.” (Hughes 299).…

The most important word in The Crucible is God because the word is used to defend and prosecute others and has an ironic meaning throughout the play. The word God is more important than other words because God is used to defend and prosecute others. To the villagers, all of their actions are judged by God and all sins are irredeemable. Although this is a large burden, it also holds the community together and prevents any form of disunity.…

Colored Words are just words that have more meaning behind them both good and bad. Hughes makes in explanation in the story when he attends his aunt’s church by putting on a false disguise in front of her and the entire congregation that he envisioned Jesus and receives the Holy Spirit. Throughout the New Testament, parables are facilitated by Jesus in order to get a certain message across to the people. Although the parables often times have the same core ideas, the different words and tones used in each of the different gospels completely change the way the parables are read. In the mustard seed parable, Matthew, Mark, Luke and Thomas all have the same essence, but the different expressions make them very distinctive. Through comparing the similarities in differences between these four Gospels, it can be deducted that similar sources and references were used in constructing the parable.…
