The Palmerston North Women’s Health Collective (PNWHC) has been part of the community since 1984 and providing the women of the Manawatu region with information and support on a wide range of health and well-being issues. The PNWHC offers free services such as pregnancy tests and cervical screening, and low cost services including counselling and natural therapies (The Palmerston North Women’s Health Collective [the PNWHC], 2014). The PNWHC was not my first choice of student placement; however, my placement at the PNWHC have become a valuable learning opportunity, and I have learnt a lot from working with the PNWHC staff, the PNWHC members, private practitioners, a nurse smear taker, and their clients. Attending a wide range of meetings and workshops was also stimulating during the 16 weeks of my placement from the early October in 2015. These learning opportunities allowed me to meet other people from different social and community work services in Palmerston North and to learn more about challenges faced by people in the community. Furthermore, doing my placement at the PNWHC helped me realise my new strengths and weaknesses as a beginning practitioner in social and community work.
In this reflection paper, I will reflect back on my placement at the PNWHC and identify the key learning areas of my placement and how my values influenced my interactions with the PNWHC staff, the PNWHC members, private practitioners, and their clients. I…
