This fire engulfed the Iroquois Theater in Chicago while the play “Let Us Swear by the Pale Moonlight” took place. It was a brand new theater and known to be one of the “finest” built in the country. The brand new theater as well as the play drew a crowd of more than 2,000 people which were mostly women and children. The Iroquois Theatre fire happened on December 30, 1903 in Chicago, Illinois. It was the deadliest single-building fire in United States history. At least 602 people died as a result of the fire, but not all the deaths were reported, as some of the bodies were removed from the scene. Blocked fire exits and the lack of a fire-safety plan caused most of the deaths. Everyone used the same entrance, and the broad stairs leading off the foyer to the balcony level were also used to reach the stairs to the gallery level.…

The high death toll of the tragic fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory was linked to many causes. Many of these causes are correlated to ignorance. This ignorance was on the part of not only the company itself, but also the company who constructed the factory building. Acclaimed playwright, actor, and poet William Shakespeare portrayed human conflict and impoverishment in many of his distinguished plays. In the play “Measure for Measure,” Shakespeare provided a glimpse into human misfortune through a character named Claudio, “The miserable have no other medicine, but only hope” (Act III, Scene II). The excerpt correlates to the thoughts of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company workers. Inhumane conditions of sweatshops, disregard of safety regulations, and inadequate laws created by the Triangle Shirtwaist Company were the origin of the horrendous fire in 1911. Inhumane conditions of sweatshops caused the inevitable Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire and death of the 146 immigrant women workers.…

In Merle Temple’s (2018), A Ghostly Shade of Pale, the book tells the story of Temple’s career as an undercover Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agent during the 1970s at the height of the war on drugs. Although the names and some of the places have been changed to protect the identities of former agents and criminals, this book has a lot of strengths and weaknesses. Some of the most notable strengths are the settings or locations, because it is based in Mississippi, which for Mississippi natives, grabs their attention and allows them to relate more to the book. Another strength lies in Temple’s ability to use very vivid imagery in descriptions of places.…

The resulting crush of people led to the crushing or suffocation deaths of 72 people (Daily Mining Gazette, 1982). The design of the egress system within this disaster led directly to the tragic outcome (Tubb & Meacham, 2007). It is important to know that this disaster happened more than ten years prior to the publication of the first model building code (the uniform building code) and at approximately the same time as the initial development of the NFPA's life safety guidelines.…

A filthy window above his cluttered worktable on the fourth floor of the Leather Works afforded Randy Scott an occasional diversion to watch clouds pass by and wonder what a new year would bring. Winter’s thaw and March’s storms were ushering in the first warm days of a new decade, 1860. Randy was hopeful this new decade would also usher in a better life for him than he had experienced so far. The ninth of July would be his fourteenth birthday, and most boys his age were on their own by then. The thought of getting as far away from the orphanage and the Leather Works was constantly on his mind, and he patiently waited for the right opportunity.…
