“Writing is the painting of the voice, Voltaire.” When you think of writing what is the first thing that comes to your mind?... Painting? For most people, including me, this is the last thing that comes to mind. I think of English class or my favorite book, but definitely not painting. However, if you start to think about these two works of art you can find many similarities. Painting and writing, even though they are portrayed in different ways, have many connections through how they allow the individual to express themselves and how they affect their audience.

Let’s look first at painting. Artists can express their individuality through many things including what brushes they use, what colors they use, and most importantly what they draw. The brush sizes and type allows artists to put their own creative twists on what they paint. Even if they paint an object that many people have also painted, a different utensil could change the object and make it their own. This could also be said for the colors they use. Painting an object a different color than what is considered the norm can allow the artist to express their individual views. Different colors could also show what kind of person the artist is. If an artist uses a dark and gloomy color scheme you could deduce that the artist might be depressed or upset. However, if an artist uses bright, vibrant colors you could come the conclusion that this person is generally happy and full of life. What they paint though is the greatest way that they can express themselves. With an infinite amount of things to paint, each artist can clearly show who they are; whether it is through an abstract style, photorealism, or surrealism. Each little twist that the artist adds to his piece allows them to express themselves even …show more content…

As said by the famous author Mark Twain, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” This shows the impact that a word can have on a story. One right word could show that the author is creative and brilliant, but on the other hand, one wrong word choice can portray a writer as someone with poor vocabulary and grammar, which could have a negative effect on their self-expression. Another way they express themselves through words is by how they take advantage of their adverbs and adjectives. An author who uses many descriptive words will have a more positive effect, while someone who is less descriptive shows that they don’t care as much and puts less effort into showing the whole picture of what they are writing about. An additional way that authors express themselves is through what kind of writing they do. A journalist writes very differently from a technical writer or novelist. The choice of the writing style shows the author’s characteristics, which in turn allows the authors to express
