The Painted Girl: A Short Story

Tizio came by and to Sarah’s horror, he took them to John’s apartment. She remembered that Painted Girl had agreed to redo his apartment for an exorbitant fee. Painted Girl’s eyes danced as she put the key in the lock. Tizio stood beside her with a few boxes in hand.
Painted Girl switched on the lights… red lights, all of them. The small room glowed. Black and gold striped walls and gold brocade furniture brightened the room. Red velvet drapes hung floor to ceiling. Walking around Sarah giggled as Tizio pulled out a few naked figures of women and placed them around the room. A large velvet painted of a naked woman hung above the settee. Red velvet barstools adorned the kitchen bar. There were three gold tasseled hanging lamps with

She knew from Tizio that John was staying with the young girl but something dreadful must have happened for these two to be ignoring each other the way they were and young Painted Girl knew about it. She wasn’t the type to gossip and had gained very little information from her. Her deaf ruse had served her well over the past year. She wore tiny hearing aids without the knowledge of her family. Oh, she hadn’t planned it that way but when she’d come home with them the first time she’d received an earful and decided to keep everyone in the dark.
She learned a lot that way.
She peered at John. He was being too quiet and eating everything in sight. Time to liven things up.
“John, you’re eating like a horse after a rodeo.” She saw John shudder with his fork halfway to his mouth. His eyes went for Sarah who stifled a giggle in her hand. He then looked over at Painted Girl who dropped her eyes and bumped into Sarah with a playful tap. No one else seemed to notice the odd exchange.
So, something is going on and for some reason a horse reference bothers John.
“You ever ridden a horse Sarah?” Let’s see how far I can go.
“Yes ma’am,” Sarah’s color heightened immediately. “I enjoy a good pony

On April 24th 1992, I met a woman at a hospital in Los Angeles. The woman was sweet, loving, and smelt like Dior Dune perfume. Once I was cleared by the doctors, the woman took me to her apartment. When we arrived, I heard kids laughing as they splashed each other in the pool, and saw a group of older guys wearing bright red t-shirts with red shoe laces. I watched for a minute, absorbing everything in like a sponge.…

The popular view of women's nature is seen as virtuous, responsible, and nurturing, the art nonetheless challenged traditional practices and demanded political change. Women have created landscapes, still life, portraiture, and abstraction, but unless the style or name of the artist is easily recognizable an art viewer is generally ignorant as to the identity or sex of the artist. The second wave of feminism became the start of the feminist art movement to achieve equality for women. The feminist art movement challenged the definition of womanhood by facing an encounter between art, social activism, and political thinking through the mediums of crafting, mass communication, and photography to protest towards a greater equality for women and…

The purpose of this investigation was to test the effect of exposure to tobacco smoke on the larval development of Vanessa cardui, commonly known as the Painted Lady. The hypothesis for this experiment was, “if tobacco smoke has a negative effect on the development of Vanessa cardui larvae, then, larvae exposed to tobacco smoke for 15,10, or 5 minutes will display reduced length (cm) compared to control larvae receiving 0 minutes exposure”. To start the experiment, the condiment cups for each experimental trial were placed around each of the three candle holders. Then the 5 minute trial cigarette was lit with a lighter and a plastic bowl was placed over it. This step was then repeated for the 10 and 15 minute trials.…

The natural landscape and the setting of the story serve as a metaphor for Ann’s sense of isolation. The location of John and Ann’s house is in an isolated setting, therefore miles away from any possible sign of life. The “snow” around the house, like an “impassable trap” encloses their house, confining them physically. The barren, unlively, “snowswept farmyard” further surrounds them every winter, leaving Ann and John to be each other’s only sense of human connection. Not only does the natural landscape depict Ann’s physical isolation, but also her emotional state of mind.…

The way in which John speaks to the narrator is infantilizing, as if he were addressing a child, rather than an adult woman. The domineering, pretentious speech with such expressions as “little girl,” in which he chastises her for leaving her bed to touch the wallpaper (Gilman 491), and “Bless her little heart!” (492), further highlight the hierarchy of power that exists within their marriage. John uses his power and his doctoral standing as a way to justify the rules set on his wife. He hangs his status over her head, pushing the idea that rest is the only cure for her mental deviance, and normal mind and body stimulation is something to be avoided at all costs.…

In “The Painted Door”, Sinclair Ross evolved his story around a lonely wife who is faced with a decision between infidelity or to become insane from seclusion. Ann, a dynamic character, showed her indecisive trait represented by the snowstorm which changes throughout the story. The snowstorm and the house can also be seen as main symbols used to indicate Ann’s feelings and her relationship with John as the walls of the house began to frost and tremble as the storm hits. As the story progresses, it seems that Ann struggles to communicate with her husband and wants to experience the thrill of “being young again”.…
