In North Whales, pushing tires down steep hills, swinging over creeks, lighting fires, and much more are normal at “adventure land” but to some might be considered too dangerous. “Adventure Land” helps children build self-confidence and courage while in their youth that will help them later in life. Hanna suggests that today we are not in tune with how we should be raising our children in society. The overall goal of parents is to not always intervene with the fun that the kids are having because of potential minor danger. Frequent checkups or the constant watching of a child have become normal. Rare accidents on playgrounds have caused us to be tense and worrisome. Plus, lawsuits and complaints have led us to adding more and more regulations on slides, toys, and even the ground where kids play. Have we gone too far on holding our kids back from fun? Hanna would say that making all these restrictions on a child’s free time and enjoyment doesn’t reduce the amount of injuries, but just reduces the child’s creativity that came with the old ways of play.
