Reading this essay I think Godbeer wanted us to see how intimate male friendships were in the past compared to now. Also learned from this essay is that society is constantly changing whether it be progressing forward or moving backwards.By this i mean, when you look at society now friendships like these are frowned upon. Because society has set the standard that men should not feel this way about another man unless they are homosexual. This is what i feel we are supposed to get out of this piece of work.

As the clique say it is coming straight from the horse 's mouth. These are first hand account personal intimate letters between genuine friends. I do not think It can get any more authentic than this.

The usefulness of Godbeer essay is that he explains and gives you the bulk and main information of what is going on. Where as with the sources you 're reading the actual letters but you might come across something that is extremely irrelevant. I feel that you learn more from the essay then the sources because it is written in the aspect of teaching you about this time in america. Just reading the letters alone the are not just pointless but you can miss valuable information Godbeer speaks on. In Godbeer piece he gives background on friendships and why they are writing one another.
The letters definitely enhance the essay because it makes the author 's work more credible. And in the letter you get to encounter the actual passion the writers feel for the recipient. The letters also give you a real first hand encounter with early america. Godbeer piece is more his opinion of what is going happening in early america.
