The Outsiders story written by SE. Hinton takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma where there are two rival gangs. The Socs and the Greaser. The theme of the story “The Outsiders” is in the name of the book itself. The book’s name “Outsiders” is a theme itself, the characters feel as if they’re being treated like freaks and feel like outsiders. For example. that fact that they have to carry “switch-blades” everywhere they go gives the reader the impression that the Greasers are hated and can be jumped at any moment by Socs. Another theme can be that Ponyboy is the outsider, all the characters have their own problems they have to deal with. Johnny has abusive parents with his father always beating him and his mother always ignoring him and when she does pay attention to him she is usually yelling at him. For example, the quote from the text “ His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him, except when she hacked off at something, and then you could hear her yelling at him all the way from our house.” SE. Hinton shows the struggles that Johnny has to go through.
