The Outsiders Theme Essay

There are many major themes in the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. I personally think that one of the themes in 'The Outsiders' is that violence does not solve any situations/problems, instead, the violence worsen the problem. I think this is one of the themes in this specific engaging book because the whole book is based on two different groups having hatred against one another which leads to a lot of violence/hatred, but some parts of the violence worsen the problem even more. A proof that violence or hatred is demonstrated in the book "The Outsiders" is on page 3-4, stated by Ponyboy, "Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream "Greaser!" at them, which doesn't make you feel too hot, …show more content…
This is the starting of the whole problem (the climax). On page 47, it states, "Johnny shook his head. "I don't know. But I bet they're looking for us. We picked up their girls. - […] - "Hey, whatta ya know?" Bob said a little unsteadily, "here's the little greasers that picked up our girls. Hey, greasers."-- "You're outa your territory," Johnny warned in a low voice. "You'd better watch it" Randy swore at us and they stepped in closer. Bob was eyeing Johnny. "Nup, pal, yer the ones who'd better watch it. Next time you want a broad, pick up yer own kind--- dirt." This is the time where Randy and Bob with other five Socs had surrounded Johnny and Ponyboy to teach them a lesson for picking up two Soc girls Sherri Valance (Bob's girlfriend) and Marcia. Instead of talking, they directly lead into a physical fight. During the fighting, Johnny kills Bob in self-defense which leads Ponyboy and Johnny running away. This proves my theme because if Bob and Randy wanted to confront Ponyboy and Johnny, they could of talk it out, but instead they directly went to harming one another. Now this has happened, in self-defense Johnny had to kill Bob which this lead them having more trouble from the police, city, and the Socs. The Socs would be a big problem because now that Johnny had already killed Bob, the Socs want revenge

Marcia was giving Randy a cold look. " And even if you are mad at us, that's no reason to go walking the streets with these bums,” Randy blurted in anger. Although the Greasers were committing crimes, their intentions were pure. When Johnny killed Bob, it was purely out of self defense. Johnny had no other choice, Ponyboy and him would’ve both been killed if he didn’t stab the Soc, a member from a different, richer gang that lives at the North Side of town. It was either Bob’s life or both of the Greasers’ lives. Johnny even claims this himself as he says, “... I had to.…

How can one simply alter another's life? There is a novel called The Outsiders, and was written by S.E. Hinton, to partly show that anyone can write an intriguing book. In the book, the main protagonist is called Ponyboy, who is a “greaser” as stated in chapter one, “but I am a greaser” (Hinton 1). Some of the choices made by Dally, Darry, and Soda affect Pony’s life, how he sees himself, and relationships with his brothers.…

S.E. Hinton’s coming of age novel The Outsiders tells the tale of two social classes, the poor greasers and the wealthy Socs. Set in 1960s Oklahoma, Pony Curtis, a sensitive fourteen-year-old greaser, gets caught up in a murder and experiences staggering amounts of heartache and grief over the course of just a few fateful days. Ponyboy narrates his story with vivid descriptions and thoughtful insights into the struggle between his impoverished gang and the privileged, vindictive Socs, who hurt greasers for fun with little to no consequence for their actions. Through her imagery, symbolism, and descriptions, S.E. Hinton makes the class struggle between the rich and poor a terrifying and violent reality.…

Life is full of different groups and separation between classes. We have all experienced the difficulties of not being accepted by everyone. Such a statement shows the way a greaser gets treated. Unfortunately, greasers don't have their family to help them out. They face the problem of no support, “His father was always beating him up and his mother ignored him, except when she was hacked off at something, and then you could hear her yelling at him clear down at our house.” S.E. Hinton (12) This shows what greasers struggle through unlike Socs.…

For my film analysis, I chose to analyze the movie “The Outsiders” directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based on the novel “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. In this movie, a gang of outcasts from the north side of town called the Greasers are always fighting against a rival group called the Socials, who are the rich jocks from the south side of town. The story follows two young Greasers, Johnny and Ponyboy, who aren’t like the others. These two see that fighting is pointless, but it’s just the way they live their life. The two boys get into a fight with some Socials and end up killing one.…

Time and time again people come to the common question of, “Movies vs. books?” Many movies follow their books word for word whether its character development or plot development, whereas other movies change and twist the book’s stories in unimaginable ways, yet people are still faced with the question, “Movies or books?” An example of how books and movies can differ is in the story “The Outsiders” written by S. E. Hinton and produced by Francis Coppola. Although there are many similarities that both the book, The Outsiders, and the movie share, there were many noticeable differences in the appearance and personalities of all the characters.
