The Greasers and the Socs are two gangs that promote violence. This stuff includes smoking, drinking, murder, and running away from home. The people that are defending the story dont care about the bad activities that go on in the story (more than half of the book is filled with bad activities) they just care about the good activities. What they're saying is The Outsiders, teaches friendship and getting over rough times. Clearly that doesn't make sense because all the good stuff in the book turns bad or turns into something worse that what it was in the beginning.
