The Outsiders Narrative

I make my way down the stairs of my house and open the door. Soda and Darry yell at me some kind of goodbye and I head out. Walking through my not so pretty neighborhood I reach the lot. I take a minute to look at the lot, and think back to when I sat in it sometimes. Blinking back to reality I look around again and realize that I need to get back on my way. I’m holding with me Gone With the Wind and a sketchbook. Making a few turns and twists, I finally reach my destination, Johnny’s grave. Walking into the cemetery I look for the oh so familiar name imprinted into the slab of stone. I read, Johnny Cade. Sitting down on the surprisingly soft and new grass, I started talking.

“Let’s start with some things that have been happening… these Socs tried to come and beat me up for the incident with Bob, but I had a pop bottle with me, so I figured I would bust off the end of the bottle and hold it by its neck, and maybe even try to scare them away… and only after I said a few words they backed up and jumped back into their car, and drove away like a bunch of pansies.” I smiled, no one got hurt, and now the Socs know not to mess with me. I continued my speech to Johnny. “Also, the fights between the Socs and the Greasers died down a little bit, so no one really gets hurt anymore…” I expect Johnny’s voice to say something like, ‘see Ponyboy, no one has to get hurt anymore’ or something like that, but I’m just met with more silence. “You know what, Johnny, how about I read to you…,” my voice made some sort of noise and my voice cracked, “we never did get to finish the book…” my eyes get misty as tears threaten to spill from my face, but I won’t let them, so I open up the book and go to the chapter we left off on, Johnny’s note still in there, but I decided to keep it there because it would always remind me of Johnny, I would never want to forget
