Author S.E. Hinton got the idea for the book, The Outsiders, when she was mad about the little situations going about her high school. Everyone would be in their own little groups and wouldn’t be friends with anyone but the group. Since she has written the book on these problems, Hinton has sold over 14 million copies and it has been made into a movie. In the book, there were many details on what Ponyboy, the main character, was thinking. It was more of what he was thinking than dialogue. Otherwise, in the movie, it showed more dialogue. Also, it made some scenes seem more intense than in the book. Adding sound effects and music. While the book and movie have many similarities and differences, the book was more effective in telling the story.
First of all, one of the most important scenes to compare is the rumble. In both the book and the movie, there was a lot of action between the Socs and Greasers. In the scene, the Socs jump Johnny and Ponyboy. Pony was being drowned in the fountain and could have died, but Johnny got up from being told to stay down and stabbed Bob, a Soc. The book and the movie were alike by the dialogue and the action. The movies said the same things that was stated in the book. You could see clearly what was happening in both. Although there are many other similarities, in the book it showed a lot more detail in what was happening to Ponyboy when he was drowning. In the movie, it focused on Pony but, a little more than Johnny because it was not in Ponyboy’s thoughts. The book was more effective during this scene because even though it did not show much of Johnny’s side, it gave me a lot of visuals on what was happening. It was also super intense with the words
