Another characteristic that Johnny revealed throughout the novel was his ability to take responsibility in the midst of perilous situations. Many children do not take the blame for mistakes they have caused, but Johnny Cade was the opposite of this. Throughout chapter six, one can configure that Johnny showed the most responsibility. In this chapter Dally, Pony, and Johnny were making their way back from Dairy Queen, when all of a sudden, they noticed that swirling, ebony smoke filled the air. Before anyone else could get injured, Johnny pushed Pony out of the church. The boys were then rushed to the hospital. “I swear, you three are the bravest kids I've seen in a long time. In fact, page 25 mentions when Johnny stood up for the girl against Dally, Dally didn’t swing at him because he is the gang's pet. This may sound a little harsh, but Johnny's excuse always seems to be, since he is the gang's pet, no one can hurt him. In addition, page 11 mentions how the gang took in Johnny for his protection.
