In the book and movie, The Outsiders there’s a lot of things going on. When the novel and the movie was made, the time frame was the 1960’s. The 1960’s was a period where fashion and cars matter the most. In The Outsiders, we had two different groups, the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs were the rich group, they wore fancy clothes, did their hair nicely and drove Mustangs. Likewise, the Greasers wore leather jackets, had messy, long, greasy hair and walked all the time, there were times that they used the bus. While watching the movie I compared the novel and the I could see that the details about this period of time were similar in both sources. The book and the movie describes and shows what these two conflicts and cultures between these two social groups represent in detail. The greasers go through a lot of racism and stereotype in both sources of entertainment. In the novel, Ponyboy describes the greasers as hoods that only know how to do bad stuff that can get them to the police, “We’re poorer that the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we’re wilder, too. Not like the Socs, who jump greasers and wreck house and throw beer blasts for kicks and get editorials in the paper for being public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while” (Hilton, 4). In the movie, when Johnny kills Bob, it was self-defense. However, the boys ran away, instead of going to the police because Ponyboy and Johnny are Greasers. Who would believe that they didn’t kill Bob, the Socs? The boys thought about going to the police but they couldn’t. They were not going to believe them, they would go straight to jail. These two scenes in the book and movie show discrimination towards the Greasers, and I agree that Greasers do bad things but not all of them are like that. It’s just like Cherry Valance, she is not the typical Socs that cares only about clothes, money, and cars. There’s more in her than her looks, she cares about people feelings, love and especially sunsets. Just like Ponyboy, the Greaser. In the movie and in the novel, you
