In the book, it sly stated that Dally’s death was police suicide, the definition behind that is that he wanted the police to shoot him, proven by a quote in The Outsider that states “And even as the policemen’s guns spit fire into the night I knew that's what Dally wanted” (p.176). Dally got into this right after Johnny’s death. Dally cares about Johnny shown when Dally stayed with Johnny in the hospital instead of going to fight, and helped Johnny run away from the cops with Ponyboy. But Johnny is dead, and in the state of shock and sadness he did what he did all his life, get into trouble. And after the police courter him in the parking lot, he saw two choices, get arrested or die. Sadly he picked the second choice by risen the unloaded gun at the police. The greasers saw this as they were trying to help. A line in the song “Out of the doorway the bullets rip” is from Ponyboys point of view since he ran to save his friend Dally, who somehow threaten the police resulting to them shooting
