In this world, people are labeled based on their appearance. Everyone is different, but similar in multiple ways. “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton is a novel about two different social groups: Socs and Greasers. Socs and Greasers are two groups who live their lives differently from one another. Socs are the upper class: wealthy and treated with respect. But, on the other hand, greasers are the low class: poor and treated like garbage. Socs and Greasers face different challenges in their lives, but some problems they share. These two groups appear different but share some similarities. Just like in reality, labeled but alike. Socs may seem like they have it all because of their rank and good judgement. In reality, they face some challenges.

They’re disrespected and lack family support. According to “The Outsiders” on page 13 it states, “It ain't his fault he likes to go to the movies, and it ain't his fault the Socs like to jump us.” This quote shows how Greasers are outcasts in society. Greasers are portrayed as garbage, no one really cares for their well being. This shows the lack of respect they get in their everyday doing, they’re pushed around by people who are ranked above them. Additionally, on page 55 it shows, “You know what a greaser is? Bob asked. White trash with long hair.” According to the text, Greasers are poorly displayed, not as “good” as a Soc. They’re so disrespected that they get referred to “white trash.” Such a statement shows the way a greaser gets treated. Unfortunately, greasers don't have their family to help them out. They face the problem of no support, “His father was always beating him up and his mother ignored him, except when she was hacked off at something, and then you could hear her yelling at him clear down at our house.” S.E.
