The Outsiders Character Analysis

I am writing my character analysis about Ponyboy. I will be telling about how Ponyboy acted throughout the story, how he reacted to things, and a summary of his over all personal appearance.
Ponyboy is the youngest person in the group of greasers coming in at age fourteen. He lives with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop because his parents died a few years ago in a car crash. He has long brown hair that is always greased and in his face. He is a good kid for the most part in the story. He goes to school and gets good grades unlike the other greasers. His older brother Darry went to school and so did Sodapop, but he dropped out because most things were too hard for

Hinton pg. 50). Ponyboy asked Johnny if he wanted to run away with him and Johnny said yes. While they were running they decided to go to the fountain. Ponyboy wanted to stay there for a little bit to cool down, so then maybe he could go home. When Pony and Johnny were at fountain the socs showed up and started to circle the park. Ponyboy wanted to handle the situation by running for it like he usually tries to do. When they started walking towards them he got scared, but he just wished for a broken bottle and backed into the fountain. The socs started to get closer and say mean things to Pony and Johnny. Pony reacted to it by trying to handle it by saying mean things back, but it didn’t help. The socs grabbed Pony and put his head in the fountain and he acted back by trying to fight back but he couldn’t do anything. Johnny killed the soc that was drowning Pony. Pony reacted this by getting sick and then freaking out about what they were going to do next. For the rest of the middle half of the story Pony always reacted to everything very cautiously and would freak out at small …show more content…
He was constantly getting mad and argueing with Darry, he didn’t try in school anymore, and didn’t like to listen to people when they knew what was best. His teachers were concerned because he used to be at the top of his classes before and now he wasn’t. Ponyboy didn’t really care that he wasn’t doing well anymore in his classes. One night when Darry and Pony got into a fight Sodapop spoke up and said some things to them that changed Pony. After Pony knew how Soda felt about all of this he stopped fighting with Darry and started trying in his classes(“I picked up the phone book and called my English teacher.” S.E. Hinton pg. 179).He was reacting to situations better again instead of wanting to fight.
Ponyboy was a very good kid in the story and did a very great thing for people at one point. At the beginning of the story he got scared of things because of socs jumping him. In the middle of the story he was scared of things and freak out at small things because of Johnny killing the soc. At the end of the story Pony acted completely different than the rest of the story by being rude, not listening, and not caring but at the very end he fixed himself and became a good kid

This should make him the innocent, lovable, baby. Pony really proves that not all gang members are always JD’s (juvenile delinquents). Another thing was his love for literature.…

The hero in the Outsiders could be more than one person, from Ponyboy even to Steve! But there is always one character that sticks out from the others, and that character is, Johnny Cade. Johnny was the character people would least expect to be the hero of the story, he was nice, helped others, and even saved someone's life! But others like Pony and Dally can be considered heroes just for willing to help others if needed. But Johnny did more than just help others and be nice, he was a hero.…

The book, The Outsiders, is about a constant battle between a group of west side rich kids, called socs, and east side poor kids, called greasers. The socs are always jumping the greasers and beating them up but they never get caught because they have rich parents and are high up in society. Throughout the book it gives details on the struggles that the kids with no money have to go through every day. It also gives insight into the true motives and feelings of people and how not everything is perfect, even for the people who seem to have it that way This book is told from the view point of a fourteen year old greaser named Ponyboy Curtis.…

He’s just a guy”, which made me, as a reader, realize that this could be a turning point for Pony. And even after that, we continue to see Ponyboy viewing the Socs as just guys and not total bitter enemies anymore by him continuously asking himself “why do I fight?” before The Big Rumble with the Socs. And my final example for this theme is how much each of the characters changed in the story; for example, Darry. At the beginning of the book, Pony referred to Darry as his annoying and mean older brother that’s constantly nagging on him, but towards the end, Pony and Darry’s relationship started to get better by the two finally listening and communicating with each other, and Pony seeing Darry finally as a friend rather than a foe.…

At first Ponyboy thinks the Socs have it made, but by the end of the novel, he too realizes that "things are rough all over". Not only does he find that different people have different problems, but little experiences can be the same for any other, such as the sunset. Once he views Cherri's and Randy's perspective without his own ideals clouding his judgment he is able to understand that the sides make no difference unless they are perceived that way. Ponyboy realizes Darry really did love and care for him and just yelled at him at times and nagged him because he didn't want him to get hurt. His fear of "losing another person he loved" (p.98) is what makes him so protective, and it's not that he has no feelings as Ponyboy originally believes, but too many.…
